An Update from the Magpies Chair

Hi Everyone,

Very difficult lock-down times for virtually all of us. I hope that you and your families are keeping safe and well.

We keep monitoring the situation daily with a view to hoping the NSWRL competitions can restart soon. In trying to set a new date for Magpie Heritage Night, our wish list revolves around the weekend of Friday, August 20th through to Sunday, August 22nd

In a perfect world, we would like to re-schedule Magpie Heritage Night for the Friday evening, August 20th. However, with the Wests Ashfield venue still closed and no imminent end to the Sydney lock-down, we don’t dare do any more than think out loud about that date.

Obviously, with state borders closed, or closing, many of our interstate and intra-state guests would have difficulty getting to Sydney and/or home. Additionally, the NSWRL have a number of Knock On Effect Cup Players currently in NRL Top 30 ‘bubbles’ in Queensland.

We picked the potential Heritage date due to the original KOE Cup draw of Wests Magpies playing Newtown Jets on Sunday, August 22nd at Lidcombe Oval in the second leg of the Tom Raudonikis Cup. We will confirm and update you all when we know for sure that the game can go ahead.

In the mean-time, some very good news. Cumberland Council has formally approved our request that the Lidcombe Oval Grandstand be named the TOM RAUDONIKIS OAM STAND.

If the Magpies-Jets clash goes ahead on Sunday, August 22nd (preceded by Wests Tigers versus Sharks Jersey Flegg), we would have an appropriate naming ceremony…and celebration…for the Tommy Stand.

Stay tuned…and let’s hope the ‘wish list’ can become possible on those dates. If not, we’ll remain patient, and do it in style when the opportunity arises.
