WESTERN SUBURBS OPEN RON MASSEY CUP CAMPAIGN WITH A WIN
The Magpies return to Lidcombe Oval was a success after they held on to beat Cabramatta 16-12 in the Ron Massey Cup.
It was the Two Blues that opened the scoring when on the back of three repeats sets, Grant Taulafo scored in the 14th minute.
Western Suburbs replied six minutes later when Brock Pelligra fed Mitch Francis and the full-back was able to slip away to score.
The Magpies hit the lead for the first time in the game when Greek Rugby League international Jonny Mitsias did well to get over the line in the 28th minute. Simon Fonua added the conversion to make it 10-6.
Wests finished the first half with 12-men after centre Dane Francis was sin-binned. It wasn't too long after Francis returned that Pelligra also spent 10-minutes off the field.
Cabramatta reclaimed the lead when hooker Moo Doh burrowed over to score under the posts.
Down by two points, the Magpies were able to get some good field position with prop Kell O'Brien leading the way. Daniel Petralia raced onto a short pass from close range to score adjacent to the posts. Fonua kicked the goal and Western Suburbs led 16-12 with seven minutes remaining.
