Western Suburbs Magpies were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Magpies Life Member, and former Wests Tigers director, Ron Powell, on Thursday 17th February.

Ron Powell was elected to the Western Suburbs District Football Club Committee in 1980, in the days when the unincorporated Magpies Club had a 16 man Committee. All positions, from President down, were ‘honorary’.

Ron started on the ‘Social Club’ sub-committee, progressing to Gear Steward, upon Frank Courte’s retirement in 1982.

He was there in the ‘dark days’, when the NSWRL twice excluded Western Suburb from the competition, in 1983 and 1984. However, the Magpies prevailed, through success in the Equity Court and other cases.

In this era, there was a wonderful spirit of co-operation at Wests, as Ron, and a multitude of Supporters, worked on Rock Concerts at Lidcombe and Flemington, fetes in Burwood Park or Lidcombe Oval, catering a concert at Brookvale Oval for a percentage of the gate for Wests or even taking a Wests home game to Seiffort Oval in 1983, when the Raiders couldn’t bring a crowd to Sydney.

Ron Powell’s commitment to all things Western Suburbs could never be disputed.

He remained on the Magpies Committee, through its incorporation in 1987, until 1999 and was a foundation director of Wests Tigers, in the joint venture with Balmain, from 2000 until 2011. Ron dearly treasured his involvement in Wests Tigers in their premiership year of 2005.

Ron was a Director of Wests Ashfield for 22 years, until 2011. He also held Board positions at various times at Wests Campbelltown and was a Magpies’ representative at the old Narellan Properties rugby league golf course.

He had emerged from the Magpie junior ranks as a Referee in the mid 1970’s and continued to serve Western Suburbs in all areas for another 35 years.

Ron Powell was bestowed Magpies Life Membership in 1985 and he was awarded Life Membership of the NSWRL in 2009.

He can rest easy knowing that his efforts have contributed to a successful Wests Ashfield organisation that will provide a pathway for future Magpie success, on and off the field.
