Round 10: Knock-on Effect NSW Cup @ North Sydney Oval (NSWRL Magic Round)
Your Victa Magpies headed to North Sydney Oval for the 2023 NSWRL Magic Round this past weekend to take on the Parramatta Eels. The high scoring match started early after Triston Reilly picked up a loose Parramatta pass and went the length of the field in the fourth minute. However, defense out wide became a problem for Wests, with the Eels picking us apart for three unanswered tries. A trick shot on the blind side was our Masterton Magic Moment for the week, when Will Smith combined with Daine Laurie to put Brandon Tumeth over in the corner just before half-time. Down by six at the break, the Magpies conceded two tries early in the second half and were forced to fight back through Triston Reilly's second, and a crafty try from dummy half by new recruit Manaia Cherrington. A comeback looked likely when Livai Saukuru continued to grow his reputation as a powerful finisher when he crossed in the 70th minute, but Will Smith was unable to level the scores from the sideline. Parramatta were too strong in the final ten minutes, and although we crossed the line right on the bell, it was called back as a no try, in the end, going down by two points in a neck-and-neck contest.
Next Saturday, the Magpies head to Homebush to take on the tenth-placed South Sydney Rabbitohs, kicking off in the NRL curtain-raiser at 12:40pm. While the Magpies are holding onto sixth place, we'll be hoping to stay in touch with the Top 4 with a good win over the Bunnies. Head down to Accor Stadium and cheer on the boys in black-and-white!
